Zhao Yiqin Douses Himself in Water as Part of Unexpected Apology Over the Ratings for His Drama Fake Princess

Zhao Yiqin Douses Himself in Water as Part of Unexpected Apology Over the Ratings for His Drama Fake Princess
There’s drama, and then there’s DRAMA.

In a move you can only expect to see on TV, Zhao Yiqin who starred with Eleanor Lee in the historical rom-com Fake Princess almost gave himself a bath when he doused himself with three glasses of water all within the minute and forty eight second video apology he posted on social media last night. In the video which he addressed to Huanyu boss Yu Zheng, the actor said “my dearest boss, I wanted to apologise to you because the numbers from the new drama (Fake Princess) fell below your expectations and only broke a billion views, I’m sorry.” Nobody could’ve predicted what happened next when he proceeded to chuck a entire glass of water onto himself. Whoa.

Zhao Yiqin then gave himself a second dousing of water after saying “I failed you and you couldn’t rely on me is my reason”. . . And then, after vociferously saying “My Girl, (the drama he’s currently starring in with with actress Li Jiaqi) I think will be the one to take off. If it still doesn’t do the trick and won't be a hit, I’ll pour myself another glass!” lobbing himself with the third glass!

Betcha nobody expected an apology to happen in this manner (nor an apology actually), least of all Yu Zheng who reposted the video with a reply to his artist saying “what’s going on? Why aren’t you returning messages on WeChat? Who taught you to do this? Let's go home (probably referring to Huanyu HQ) and play by ourselves, okay? Today is enough of a downer already, please don't give people another reason to accuse me of trying to draw attention to myself again. Besides, it’s not a drama we produced, why are you so worked up over this? Exasperating!

Whoa, the poor guy really put too much pressure on himself to deliver. I hope he takes a moment to reflect and take care of his mental health... and maybe to also have that chat with Yu Zheng. It is what it is and there’s really no use trying to put the weight of the entire production on his own shoulders. Hope he’ll come out of this funk soon and focus his efforts instead on making his own acting even better for his next project.

  1. Is 1 billion considered that bad for this type of drama? Even Romance of Tiger and Rose is still struggling to reach 2 billions. I remember Fake Princess ranked a few times in Top 10 weekly online drama or something. The show didn't look that high budget anyway.

  2. I'm currently watching and really enjoying this drama (I've watched 21 episodes) and think Zhao Yiqin is doing a great job. I honestly am not sure why there isn't more people watching this but none of it is Zhao Yiqin fault. It's a low budget web drama afterall. I've never seen him in anything before but now I plan to watch My Girl simply because of him. Really sad he feels he has to apologize for this.

  3. hahaha... many c-nets are saying that this entire episode is just a publicity stunt to generate buzz for the webdrama, especially since Yu Zheng is involved.

First, Yu Zhen wrote that weibo post about this young actor and passive aggressively blamed some casting director for not hiring the actor because he isn't famous. YZ added that the ratings and success for the new drama "My Girl" will depend on this actor.

Then, dramatically and unexpectedly, this young actor doused himself with water on Weibo because the new drama isn't doing well. It generated some discussion on ent forums b/c the dousing of the water is so dramatic.

Then, Xu Zheng responded to the young actor's video in another Weibo by expressing "surprise" and reposting the water video.

C-nets are saying, and I tend to agree, that this is just another publicity ploy by YZ to generate buzz for his actors and/or projects. Just par for the course.

  4. While it is true that some actress buys water army, not everybody does that.

Zhao lusi is a good example of honesty. Only Tiger and Rose received good hype deservingly because the content is really good. With full honesty, it deserves the attention it got. All her other projects, even when they looked bigger budget with populary actors, they were disappointing so even if they starred her they didn't get good reviews. So that's all about honesty.

Fake princess's content is not even that good, even if the actors are very popular, the views shouldn't be that high because who's gonna rewatch the crap unless the actress buy water army to help. It's going to look even more obvious if the actors are new. With actors that are already famous, at least some people will believe fans are just being crazy for their idol's sake, and knows nothing about the water army side of it.

Unless the story is as intricate as The Untamed, first timers can gain that much popularity in one go. But for a regular silly rom-com like this 1billion is too much.China alone already makes 1billion in the earth's population.

  5. To be honest Zhao Yiqin's acting isn't bad, he portrays his characters in his dramas pretty well. I watched his drama, Fake Princess and it's pretty good. He shouldn't have to blame himself for low ratings. The drama isn't a big production nor does it have any big names in the cast so I wouldn't expect a lot of viewership from the drama

  6. Why do that, even for publicity stunt still not good because it gives a bad impression. I hope his mental health is okay, don't put too much pressure on yourself Yiqin. Should just focus on his acting and choose a good project next time. I'm watching my girl, not as good as TROTAR but still I like it.

  7. Just a quick, easy and cheap publicity stunt. I had no idea who he is, never heard of him, never seen his work. Now I'm reading this article. As the old saying goes, there is no such thing as bad publicity for people in this business.

  8. I'm a fan of Eleanor so I watched this drama when it first came out, however, this drama plot's didn't really make a lot of sense to me like I know this is a fun drama but you still gotta make some sense no matter what, so I dropped at around episode 14-ish? Then I started on TROTAR after reading its synopsis, even though I didn't know who Zhao Lusi & Ding Yuxi were, and never looked back, because TROTAR although it was a fun drama, it still made sense (there was very clearly a central plot from beginning to end while for Fake Princess, I didn't know what was the whole point of the show? Like no central plot/goal?)... it's so important for dramas to make sense...
