The Destiny of White Snake 天乩之白蛇传说 premiered July 9, 2018 but was abruptly taken off air last July 23, 2018 mid-broadcast. The show starring Yang Zi (Heavy Sweetness Ash-like Frost) and Ren Jialun (Glory of Tang Dynasty) had accumulated over 1 billion views in less than two weeks into airing, but it has yet to resume broadcast which has impatient fans frustrated.

iQiYi released a statement saying that they needed to modify the content of the drama. Rumor has it that the drama was flagged for offending Buddhism due to the love line between the monk and the green snake, played by Li Man (Autumn Cicadas) and Mao Zijun (Hao Lan Zhuan).

Guardian 镇魂 has completed its broadcast but viewers are now unable to access the drama because it was blocked by Youku early this month. Youku has yet to confirm the actual reason behind the restricted access but there's speculation that it was blocked for promoting superstition and violence.

What's your opinion? What do you think the real reason is? It has made me curious about the dramas now so I hope they would resume access soon.

  1. HAHAHAHAHAHHA it's alway so funny when these dramas get boycotted.

Last time Gina Jin's Meng Fei was taken off air for no reason, my guess was the storyline is overly dumb and extremely pointless. Some people like it, but it was seriously out of my taste.

Question, how come the Monkey King III the monk was allow to fall in love? SARTF doesn't apply to films but only dramas?

    1. It could be bec recently, there was a high ranking buddhist leader accused of sex harassment of buddhist nuns. The high ranking buddhist leader denied everything.

  3. The earlier versions of White Snake had the villain as the buddhist monk so there was no love affair between the White Snake and the buddhist monk. The love affair was between the White Snake and the scholar.
Guardian probably got banned bec of China's discrimination against homosexuals.

    1. The western concept of "homophobia" doesn't really apply to China though. Over there, homosexuality is considered a private matter. Most people don't care about it. The goal of Chinese media is to promote Chinese culture, not an individual's sexuality.

  4. I would say that the acting of the 2 leads in Guardian was just too good..you could still feel and see the loveline from the novel in the drama...and as SARFT goes strongly against homosexual content, it was probably taken off because of this..the so called reasons "violence and superstition" have me laughing tears..Guardian is tame compared with other dramas when it comes to violence..Bloody Romance is much more brutal..I just hope they don´t take this one down, too.

  5. For “Guardian”,the censors should be proud that their countrymen rose above the challenging restrictions to showcase their talents and abilities in keeping with the vibes and tones of the theme without ramming down the viewers' throats with explicitness. Conspiracy to stifle China wave? ! Behind the times?!¯\_(?)_/¯ !

For “Destiny of White Snake”, thought communist ideology don't support religion?! Now I am behind time! ¯\_(?)_/¯ !

  6. Shows has to pass censorship before it gets put on air, so why do some still get pulled off air after its already passed censorship?
