C-drama Ratings and Celeb Rankings (week starting Jun 19)

Princess Agents Shawn Dou
It looks like I'm going to be talking about Princess Agents in the weeks to come because it continues to be uncontested in rankings. It's worth noting that the show airs from 10 p.m. onwards so the fact that it is getting numbers as high as 1.6% is impressive. These are numbers you'd normally see on primetime and yet no primetime show even comes close.

I have just caught up and things are really heating up, boiling even. I thought that I was firmly in the Zhao Li Ying and Lin Gengxin ship but Shawn Dou and his winning smile is becoming impossible to resist. It's unfortunate that his smile is all but gone given what his character went through the past week, and I'm not sure that my heart can handle more trauma (okay, it can, but it hurts).

Princess Agents

As for the rest of the shows, White Deer Plain bowed out in second to be replaced by Advisors Alliance which settled for fourth. Both have simultaneous broadcasts, which means that rankings and ratings could technically be better if it only aired on one channel.

With a few shows out of the way, Rush to the Dead Summer seems set to win the primetime game with numbers that occasionally surpass 1.0%. Similar to last week, My Ruby My Love trails very closely and actually managed to overtake Rush to Dead Summer at one point.

I expected Midnight Diner to do better, but it is barely able to break into the top five, which I'm guessing could be due to how the drama is setup, cast members come and go so you're not really glued to one cohesive story. Meanwhile, A Life Time Love climbs one spot to seventh whereas Legend of Dragon Pearl shows no sign of recovering from ratings as low as 0.1%.

  1. Very impressive for Princess Agents in that time slot. Midnight Dinner got hit with terrible reviews that is one of the reasons it is not doing that well. I think fans of the original really did not like the remake.
I once read that simultaneous broadcast is not suppose to impact ratings, something about them reaching completely different audiences but I am not sure as to why.

    1. interesting info about Midnight, I wonder if it's as terrible as they say.. I'm still determined to catch those episodes with Mark Chao in it.

ooh really? That is weird coz logically speaking it should affect ratings or maybe they mean you have to combine the ratings from both networks(?), only then will it be accurate.

    2. I read a combo last year of fans talking about mediocre ratings (low 1s and high 0.9s) for a TV show for their star. A fan said that is was because it was airing in two networks at the same time, but others responded that it doesn't affect ratings since each network reaches different audience. I don't know the logistics behind it. I originally thought that it would impact ratings, but it seems like it doesn't. As for combining, I know they don't combine them since Ode to Joy 2 is #3 & #4 in average ratings for the year so far.

The douban score for Midnight is 2.8 last I saw. I haven't seen it, but the director even had to apologize. I honestly think it probably has more to do with it being a remake and people having certain expectations.

    3. maybe they mean that each network has its own audience so airing the same show on another channel won't really cannibalize ratings for the other. i'm not sure if i even buy my own argument but it's just a guess:)

And yikes 2.8 is very low, that's unfortunate given such a big ensemble cast too.

  2. I'm still firmly on the Lin Gengxin ship (Frankly I'd take him with or without* Zhao LiYing, lol!), but I have grown to love Shawn Dou and his smile.

I do feel that the pacing is off though, and I'm annoyed they're dawdling in this tragedy porn when there's so much story to cover. There's no reason for these scenes to be dragging on and nauseum. Although I will say that the glory shit of Shawn Dou screaming his mother's name in pain, rage, and helplessness is FABULOUS,utterly amazing. But I need the plot to move.

    1. And I am desperately hoping someone will sub Advisors Alliance in English. Fingers crossed!! Been wanting to see it for ages!

    2. I agree they are taking too long with this tragedy. Good things previews show that we are moving on a bit, I was honestly getting tired.
Firmly on the Lin GengXin ship too.

    3. lol.. u're hilarious and I totally get why... LGX is very swoon-worthy here, such a giver. Can't it be evening already, I need my Princess Agents fix:)

  3. I've droped PA for now. Sad because I was looking forward to it for months but I found the early episodes very disappointing. I've heard things have massively improved the last week of episodes so I will pick it back up.

I'm so glad for ZLY and Shawn Dou the drama is doing well. I wish Shawn were the lead as I musch prefer his acting (and face!) to Lin Geng Xin but I'm really happy the success of the show has raised his popularity.

    1. Absolutely agree. In my opinion Shawn Dou/Dou Xian is really stealing the show together with ZLY. None of the other males are in his class. I have started to watch some of his earlier works and can recommend Zhang Yimou's "Under The Hawthorne Tree", which is his first big role 2010. A very sad, tragic and beautiful film based on a real life story. Also "Wolf Totem" is a movie deserved to be seen, even though his role is not as big as the lead Feng Shao Feng. ZLY is doing her most awesome performance ever. Gorgeous, cunning and more mature in my opinion. Watched her in "Mystic Nine" not long ago where I thought she was totally mismatched and looked and sounded like a school-girl dressed in her mother's clothes.

  4. I might get a flack for saying this, but.. I'm rather surprised that many are complaining that the the 2 episodes of the Yan family massacre + Yan Xun's torture are too long and draggy, but don't see a problem in the 15 episodes of Yuwen Yue training Xing Er (and their posing while doing that) and all the maidservants catfight :D.

    1. Did anybody mention those episodes? Not everyday try to posit your POV as more important/substantial and salient. Just post your opinion and go. Yes, it WAS draggy, and people (I included), found it draggy.
      you didn't. Cool beans. Next.

    2. Yeah I don't understand why. Maybe they are too deep into the the LGX-ZLY ship, to fail to see the irrelevance of those scenes with the plot. But then again, this is a drama. And LGX is the bigger star. So producers have no choice but to give more screen time to LGX.
