Sound of the Desert 风中奇缘 is a 36-episode Chinese TV series based on the first book of Love in the Han Dynasty, a trilogy by Tong Hua 桐华. It tells the story of a brave carefree and intelligent girl who grows up in the company of a pack of wolves but she assumes a new identity after making her way back to the capital.
It received much-hype due to its similarity to Scarlet Heart, also penned by Tong Hua, also produced by Tangren and also featured Liu Shi Shi (Imperial Doctress) in a starring role. It makes for an emotional rollercoaster indeed when the protagonist is left to choose between Eddie Peng (The Great Wall) and Hu Ge (Nirvana in Fire), a tough choice to say the least.
Nevertheless, to compare it with Scarlet Heart is like comparing apples to oranges because Scarlet Heart is ultimately an epic romance amidst a political war amongst princes while Sound of the Desert is more about romance than anything else, though not without the usual palace machinations often seen in ancient dramas.
This is not one for wuxia lovers but upon realizing that it is a romance drama, I developed a far greater appreciation for it and was embarrassingly caught in the fervor of desperately wanting Team Eddie to win, though I liked Team Hu Ge too.
