The Rise of Phoenixes (2018)

Rise of the Phoenixes
After endless rumors linking Chen Kun to The Rise of Phoenixes 天盛长歌, he finally confirms as the lead which marks his highly-anticipated return to dramaland. Ni Ni was subsequently confirmed as his leading lady while Zhao Li Xin, Ni Da Hong, Yuan Hong, Wang Ou, Bai Jing Ting, Zhang Xiao Chen and Liu Min Tao round up the rest of the cast.

Rise of the Phoenixes Chen Kun
The 70-episode Chinese drama is adapted from a novel by Tian Xia Gui Yan 天下归元 and it follows Feng Zhi Wei, a strong female protagonist who discovers a truth that turns her against the man that she loves. The story seems to be female-centric originally though I wouldn't be surprised if they tweak the plot for the sake of Chen Kun who plays a character described as extremely clever and ambitious yet hides behind a figurative mask.

Feng Zhi Wei is the unwanted illegitimate daughter of the Qiu Manor who was eventually kicked out. In order to survive, she enters a school in disguise as a man and becomes an exceptional student and a valuable resource of the nation. However, palace politics, conspirators and secrets from the past threaten her beliefs and causes her to take the opposing side against the 6th Prince.

Release Date: August 14, 2018 Hunan TV (two episodes daily at 8pm) and iQiYi, Mango TV (episodes released 10pm)

  1. This the second long series from China that we have watched the other being the story of Widow Wu. 70 episodes is long and as a history nut i love this story and production. My wife and i have watched many Korean historical dramas and enjoyed them also.

    Very well done.

  3. My favorite international drama of 2018. Can't rave about it enough. I was so emotionally invested that 70 episodes flew by so fast. I think Chen Kun needs to win an award for his performance.
