Brought to us by H&R Century Pictures, Sword of Legends 古剑奇谭 is a 52-episode Chinese TV series starring Li Yi Feng, Yang Mi, Qiao Zhenyu, Ma Tianyu, Zheng Shuang, Gillian Chung, William Chan, Chen Zi Han, Gao Weiguang and Di Li Re Ba.
It had such a successful run in 2014 that its gigantic ensemble of newcomers quickly shot to fame not only in the period drama genre but in c-entertainment in general.
Sword of Legends follows a breed of fantasy wuxia dramas that is popular with the masses and the story, like most others, tells a hero with a tragic past who learns the ways of magic and martial arts before embarking on an adventure with his gang of friends.
There is something about the typical superhero that I am always drawn to. Bring in one tortured by his demons and cast aside by his peers and I fall hook, line and sinker. What more when the gold standard for c-dramas is to ramp up the visuals with beautiful sets, costumes, and an amazing soundtrack to boot.
That said, Sword of Legends is adapted from a role-playing game and it works, keeping to its youthful appeal with a live-action interpretation of once animated characters. It may have flaws, so many that I lost interest at some point, but it is surely one that I remember fondly to this day.
