Princess Agents 楚乔传 is a 68-episode Chinese TV series based on the novel Queen of No. 11 Agent by Xiao Xiang Dong Er 潇湘冬儿. The original story revolves around an agent who time travels to the Xia Kingdom after being killed in action and she ends up accomplishing great feats during her time.
It stars an ensemble cast led by Zanilia Zhao Li Ying (Legend of Chusen), Lin Gengxin (God of War Zhao Yun), Shawn Dou (Tribes and Empires), Li Qin, Deng Lun (Because of Meeting You), Maggie Huang (Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms), Niu Jun Feng (Just One Smile is Very Alluring) and Alan Wang Yan Lin (Monster Killer).
When I first heard about this, it instantly reminded me of Rookie Agent Rouge crossing over to ancient times but the latest synopsis seems to have dropped the time travel element completely. In the Western Wei Kingdom, Chu Qiao is a slave girl sent to the hunting grounds to be killed for sport. She is rescued by Yan Xun, a young man from a noble family who also becomes her close confidante. However, circumstances lead Yan Xun astray and drives a wedge between the two. Determined to fight for what she believes in, Chu Qiao joins Yuwen Yue waving the banner to unite the lands and free the slaves.
I've seen a number of Korean dramas tackling slavery but can hardly name a single Chinese drama in the same genre and not knowing what to expect somewhat lessened the hype for me.
Nevertheless, the trailer changed everything in the less than two minutes. We get a glimpse of a cruel inhumane world baring the injustices of its time, and at the heart (or perhaps the bottom) of it is a young woman whose journey is pulsing and provocative. I have to admit, now I'm very hyped for this.
